 The 63rd Pennsylvania

1984-today

Following the expiration of its term of service, the veterans of the 63rd Pennsylvania met annually until their last member passed away in the mid-1930s.  The story of the 63rd was to remain in the annals of Pennsylvania history until the winter of 1984.

In December 1984, a delegation of local Civil War enthusiasts met to recreate this important regiment.  They chose the 63rd PA, Company C because it was recruited from western Pennsylvania.  Civil War units were comprised of men from one town or county, much like the volunteer firemen of today.  Company C was originally recruited from men residing in Beaver County, with several from Allegheny County.

Our organization seeks to honor and remember those brave men who fought and died during our tragic Civil War.  We actively participate in battle reenactments, living history demonstrations, encampments, fashion shows, military drills, and public speaking engagements.

Battle reenactments are held annually all over the eastern United States, and often on the sites where original battles occurred.  These events give our members and the general public a chance to experience what a battle was like during the war.

Living histories do not necessarily include battle simulations, but focus on the everyday lives of the people of the Civil War era.  Much of the time these include encampment displays that feature outdoor cooking, military drill, and home front activities.  Many of our members have given presentations at professional seminars and other public speaking engagements.  Most recently, our organization has developed a period fashion show that showcases the clothing and accouterments of both the soldiers and civilians of the Civil War era.

While the focus of the organization is to portray a military unit, many of our members seek to represent Civil War civilians.  Our civilian members have an active role in all of our unit activities.  In essence, they portray those who supported the war effort while at home and in the field.

The 63rd Regiment of Pennsylvania Infantry, Company C is always looking for new members to share this great hobby of ours.
